THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE STRENGTH

January 2024

Jacob Grey Firearms is committed to manufacturing firearms of the utmost highest quality, using only the best materials to ensure accuracy, reliability, durability, and safety. All our Modern Sporting Rifleupper and lower receivers are made from 7075 Aircraft Grade Billet Heat Treated Aluminum, which is a superior material when compared to castings or forgings.

Billet aluminum is created by pouring molten aluminum into a billet mold, which is then cooled and solidified. The resulting aluminum block is then machined into the desired shape. This process creates a uniform grain structure throughout the material, which results in a stronger and more reliable receiver. In contrast, castings and forgings involve different methods of shaping aluminum, which can lead to the formation of voids, cracks, or other imperfections in the material. These imperfections can negatively affect the structural integrity of the receiver and decrease its lifespan.

Aircraft Grade Billet Heat Treated Aluminum is an alloy that is commonly used in aerospace and military applications. It is a high-strength material that has excellent resistance to fatigue and corrosion. Additionally, it has a high strength-to-weight ratio, making it ideal for use in firearms. The heat treatment process further enhances the material’s strength and durability, by subjecting it to high temperatures and then rapidly cooling it to create a more stable and uniform grain structure.

At Jacob Grey Firearms, we believe that the quality of a firearm depends on the quality of its components.

Our choice to use Aircraft Grade Billet Heat Treated Aluminum for our upper and lower receivers, including the ar9 upper and ar9 lower, is based on its superior mechanical properties and reliability. By using billet, we ensure that our firearms have a stronger, more uniform structure that is resistant to fatigue and corrosion. Additionally, billet machining allows us to create complex shapes with tighter tolerances, resulting in a more precise fit and better accuracy.

The bottom line is that many Modern Sporting Rifle manufacturers choose to use forgings rather than billet because it is a quicker and cheaper process. Forgings involve heating a solid piece of metal and then shaping it using a hydraulic press. This process results in a stronger material with a more uniform grain structure than castings, but not as strong as billet aluminum. On the other hand, billet aluminum is created by pouring molten aluminum into a billet mold, which is then machined into the desired shape. The resulting product is much stronger and more accurate than a forging. However, machining billet aluminum requires significantly more machine time, which translates to a higher cost to manufacture. While using forgings may be a cost-effective option, it is not the superior choice in terms of strength and accuracy. In contrast, Jacob Grey Firearms only uses Aircraft Grade Billet Heat Treated Aluminum for our receivers, ensuring that our firearms are of the highest quality, accuracy and built to last.

Jacob Grey Firearms’ commitment to quality is reflected in our choice of materials. By using Aircraft Grade Billet Heat Treated Aluminum for our upper and lower receivers, we ensure that our firearms are built to the highest standards of accuracy, durability, reliability, and safety. We believe that our customers deserve the best, and we are proud to offer them firearms that are truly top-of-the-line.
